When to Replace a Motorcycle Helmet

After an impact, after about five years, or the moment the fit goes — the three replacement triggers, why the EPS liner is the reason, and how to read a date-of-manufacture stamp.

There are three answers to this question and only one of them is a number. A helmet is finished when it has taken an impact, when it has aged out, or when it no longer fits properly — and the first of those overrides everything else, immediately, regardless of how new the helmet is or how undamaged it looks.

Understanding why requires knowing what actually protects you, because it is not the part you can see.

What actually does the protecting

A helmet has two structural layers doing two different jobs. The outer shell— polycarbonate, fiberglass composite or carbon — spreads the load of an impact across a wide area and resists penetration. Underneath it, the EPS liner — the dense white polystyrene foam — is what absorbs the energy, and it does so by crushing. The foam cells collapse, and in collapsing they stretch the impact out over a longer distance and more time, which is the entire mechanism by which your brain decelerates survivably rather than abruptly.

The crucial property: EPS crushes once. It does not spring back. Crushed foam is permanently thinner and permanently less able to absorb the next impact, and the crushed area can be millimeters-deep inside a helmet whose glossy shell shows nothing at all. Everything else on this page follows from that one fact.

Trigger 1: any significant impact

If your head was in the helmet and the helmet hit something — road, curb, car, ground during a low-speed drop with you on the bike — replace it. Not “if it looks damaged.” Not “if it was fast.” The shell is designed to survive impacts that have already used up the liner beneath it, which means visual inspection of the outside tells you very little about the inside.

This is also why you should not keep riding in a helmet after a crash you walked away from. A helmet that did its job once has spent the part of itself that does the job. It is now a hat with excellent branding.

What about dropping it off the seat?

Different event, and the internet consensus that any drop ruins a helmet is overstated. An empty helmet falling a couple of feet onto a garage floor imparts a fraction of the energy of a head-in-helmet impact, because there is no 5 kg of head inside driving it. Inspect it: look for crazing or cracks in the shell, press systematically around the EPS for soft or dented areas, and check the liner has not separated from the shell. If it fell hard, fell far, or landed on a corner or an edge, or if you cannot convince yourself it is fine, replace it. Uncertainty is not an acceptable state for this particular object.

Trigger 2: age — roughly five years

The commonly published guidance is about five years from the date of manufacture, and that distinction matters: a helmet can sit in a distributor’s warehouse or on a shop shelf for a year or more before you buy it, so a helmet you bought two years ago might be four years old.

What actually ages:

  • The EPS liner.Repeated heat cycles, sweat and time gradually change the foam’s properties and its ability to crush the way it was designed to.
  • The comfort liner and cheek pads.These pack down with use, which loosens the fit — and a loose helmet can rotate or come off, which is a protection failure independent of the foam.
  • Adhesives and resins. The bonds holding the shell layers, the liner and the fittings together degrade with UV, heat and humidity.
  • The retention system. Strap webbing frays and stitching weakens. The strap is what keeps the helmet on your head, which is the precondition for everything else working.

Five years is guidance, not a legally enforced expiry. Nobody will stop you riding in a seven-year-old helmet. But a high-mileage rider who sweats into a helmet three hundred days a year will reach the practical end well before the calendar says so, and a helmet stored in a hot garage ages faster than one kept indoors.

Finding the date stamp

Look on the chin strap, under the comfort liner at the crown, or molded into the EPS itself. It is normally a month-and-year label or a printed dial. You will often have to pull the liner out to find it — which is a good excuse to inspect the foam while you are in there.

Trigger 3: the fit has gone

This is the one riders ignore, because it happens gradually. Comfort padding compresses over hundreds of hours until a helmet that was snug is merely present. A helmet that moves independently of your head cannot keep its liner where the impact is going to be.

Run the roll-off test every few months. With the strap done up properly, get someone to try to roll the helmet forward off your head from the back, and then backwards from the front. It should not come off. If it can be rotated significantly or worked off, the helmet is done — or at minimum needs new cheek pads, which most makers sell in multiple thicknesses. Things that quietly kill a helmet early

  • Gasoline, solvents and harsh cleaners.They attack polycarbonate shells and shields and degrade adhesives. Even fumes from storing a helmet next to a fuel can are worth avoiding. Mild soap and water is the correct answer — see how to clean a motorcycle helmet.
  • Hanging it on a mirror or a handlebar. A point load against the EPS gradually deforms the foam exactly where the fit depends on it.
  • Heat. Rear parcel shelves, closed cars in summer, and on top of a radiator to dry. Heat is what degrades foam, adhesives and resins fastest.
  • Stickers and paint. Solvent-based adhesives and paints can attack a shell. Most makers explicitly advise against painting a helmet for this reason.
  • Cutting or grinding the EPS. Usually done to fit an intercom. Removing liner material removes protection at that exact point. If a comms unit does not fit, buy a different unit.

Reasons to replace early that are not about damage

Standards move. ECE 22.06 replaced 22.05 and added rotational and oblique-impact testing along with more impact points, so a helmet certified a decade ago cleared a less demanding protocol than a current one. Similarly, SNELL revises its motorcycle standard periodically, and a helmet carrying an older revision was tested to an older specification.

None of that makes an old certified helmet unlawful or worthless. It does mean that if you are on the fence about a helmet approaching five years old, “the current standard tests things mine was never tested for” is a legitimate thumb on the scale. Disposing of the old one

Cut the chin strap before you bin it. That sounds dramatic and it is the one step that guarantees nobody pulls a helmet with an unknown history out of a skip and rides in it. Do not sell it, do not pass it to a new rider as a starter lid, and do not keep it as the spare you hand a pillion — a passenger deserves a helmet whose history someone can actually vouch for.

How often should you replace a motorcycle helmet?

Immediately after any significant impact, regardless of how the shell looks. Absent an impact, the widely-published guidance is roughly five years from the date of manufacture — not from the date you bought it, which can be a year or more later. The reasoning is that the EPS liner, the comfort foam, the adhesives and the shell resins all age with heat, sweat, UV and time. Do I have to replace my helmet if I drop it?

Not usually. Dropping a helmet off a seat or a workbench onto the floor with nothing in it is a very different event from a head inside it hitting the road, and the widespread belief that any drop destroys a helmet is overstated. What you should do is inspect it: look for cracks or crazing in the shell, press around the EPS for soft or compressed spots, and check that the liner and shell have not separated anywhere. If the helmet took a serious fall, landed on a hard edge, or you cannot satisfy yourself it is undamaged, replace it — a helmet is cheap relative to the thing it protects.

How do I find the date of manufacture on a helmet?

It is usually a printed or stamped label showing month and year, and the common places are on the chin strap, under the comfort liner at the crown, or molded into the EPS itself. You may have to pull the liner out to find it. What matters is that this is the manufacture date, not the purchase date — a helmet can sit in a warehouse or on a shelf for a long time, so a helmet you bought two years ago may be four years old.

Can I buy a used motorcycle helmet?

We would not, and the reason is not snobbery. A helmet's protective element is a single-use crushable liner, and you cannot see whether it has already been crushed — a helmet that has taken a serious impact can look perfect. You are also inheriting an unknown age, unknown storage conditions, unknown chemicals used on it, and a fit that was broken in around somebody else's head. There is no way to inspect your way to confidence on the one thing that matters.

Does an old helmet lose its certification?

The certification was granted to the model, and it does not expire in a legal sense — an old DOT helmet is not illegal to wear. What changes is two things. The physical helmet ages: liner foam compresses, adhesives and resins degrade, and the fit loosens as the comfort padding packs down. And the standards themselves move on: ECE 22.06 replaced 22.05 and added rotational and multi-point impact testing, so a decade-old helmet was certified against a less demanding protocol than a current one. Both are reasons to replace, neither makes the old helmet unlawful.

What should I do with my old helmet?

Do not sell it or give it away for road use, for the same reason we would not buy a used one — the next owner cannot verify its history. Cut the straps and dispose of it, or keep it as a garage object. It is worth destroying the retention system specifically so a well-meaning person cannot pull it out of a bin and ride in it.
