Modular vs Full-Face Helmets: Which Should You Buy?
The trade you're actually making is a hinge and a latch, in exchange for lifting the chin bar at every stop. Here is what that costs and what it buys.

Most riders arrive at this question after deciding they want chin protection — which is the right decision, and already the biggest one. What’s left is whether the chin bar should be part of a single continuous shell or a hinged assembly you can lift. That is a narrower trade than the forum arguments suggest, and it comes down to four things: structure, weight, noise and how often you stop.
The short version
- Buy a full-face if you ride long uninterrupted stretches, care about weight and noise, or want the structurally simplest chin protection available. It is also usually the better helmet at any given price, because none of the budget went into the hinge.
- Buy a modularif you stop often, wear glasses, ride with a passenger, commute in traffic, or find a full-face claustrophobic enough that you’re tempted not to wear it. A helmet you actually put on beats a theoretically better one you don’t.
Structure: what the hinge actually changes
A full-face helmet’s chin bar is part of one continuous shell, backed by a continuous EPS liner. A modular’s chin bar is a separate assembly attached at two pivots and held closed by a latch. Both types, when DOT-certified, have cleared the same federal impact, penetration and retention requirements under FMVSS 218— that test doesn’t distinguish between them.
What the hinge introduces is more interfaces and more parts that have to do their job under load. That is why the full-face is still generally described as the more protective style, and it’s an honest description rather than snobbery. It is also why the difference narrows substantially when the chin bar is latched shut, which it should be at any speed above walking pace.
P/J homologation
On ECE-certified helmets you’ll see a P or P/J marking. P means the helmet is rated in the protective closed configuration. J means it is also rated with the chin bar raised. A P/J-rated modular is certified for both positions; a P-only modular is certified closed. If you intend to ride at low speed with the front lifted, that marking is the thing to look for. Note that the US DOT standard has no equivalent marking — this is an ECE concept.
Weight: 150 to 300 grams, typically
The hinge, latch, extra shell structure and (usually) a drop-down sun visor all add mass. Expect roughly 150–300 g over a comparable full-face. Over a four-hour ride that is a real fatigue difference, because your neck holds it up against turbulence continuously and every head-check adds torque proportional to the mass.
The important caveat: compare models, not categories. A premium composite modular can weigh less than a budget polycarbonate full-face. Shell material moves the number more than the hinge does.
Noise
A cheap modular is one of the loudest things you can put on your head, because the hinge and chin-bar joint create air paths a one-piece shell doesn’t have. A premium touring modular can be one of the quietest, because its maker knew that and engineered multi-stage seals around the joint. Cost: what the same money buys
At any given price, some of a modular’s budget went into the hinge mechanism rather than the shell, the liner or the shield. That is why a $300 full-face is usually a better-built helmet than a $300 modular. If the convenience is worth it to you, it’s worth it — just go in knowing that’s the exchange rate.

The full-face rider
Long-distance touring on open roads. Sport and track riding, where weight and aerodynamics dominate. Anyone who values quiet. New riders on a budget, because the money goes further. See our full-face picks.

Commuters in traffic who stop constantly. Riders who wear glasses — getting glasses past a full-face eyeport is a daily annoyance a flip-front removes entirely. Anyone riding two-up who talks to a passenger at every stop. Riders in hot climates who need to open up while stationary. What doesn’t belong in this decision
- “Modulars fly open in crashes.”A certified modular’s latch is part of what the certification tests. This is a claim you’ll see repeated without a source.
- Brand loyalty. Fit outranks brand, every time. A helmet in the wrong head shape is uncomfortable at hour one and moves on your head in an impact.
- Looks alone. Fine as a tiebreaker between two helmets that both fit. Not fine as the primary criterion for the object protecting your skull.
Whichever you buy
Measure your head and check your head shape first — our sizing guide covers the process. Confirm the DOT certification is genuine. Replace the helmet after any significant impact, and roughly every five years otherwise. And if you buy a modular, ride with the chin bar latched.

Are modular helmets less safe than full-face helmets?
A DOT-certified modular has cleared the same federal test (FMVSS 218) as a DOT-certified full-face. The structural difference is that a modular has a hinge and a latch where a full-face has continuous shell — more parts, more interfaces. That's why the full-face is still generally regarded as the more protective style, and why some modulars carry only a P (closed) rating rather than P/J dual homologation. Ridden with the chin bar latched, the practical gap is smaller than the internet suggests.
What does P/J dual homologation mean on a modular helmet?
It means the helmet is certified for use in two configurations: P for the protective closed position with full chin coverage, and J for the open position with the chin bar raised. A P/J-rated modular is legally usable at low speed with the front lifted in ECE markets. Not every modular carries the J rating — if you plan to ride at all with the chin bar up, look for it specifically.
How much heavier is a modular helmet?

Can I ride with the chin bar up on a modular helmet?
Only at low speed, and only if the helmet is P/J homologated for open use. Even then, a raised chin bar provides no chin protection in a crash — it's for stopping at lights, talking, drinking or cooling off, not for riding at speed. Latch it fully before you get moving. At highway speed a raised chin bar also generates significant lift and drag on your neck.
Are modular helmets louder than full-face helmets?
Cheap ones usually are, because the hinge and chin-bar joint create paths for air to enter that a one-piece shell doesn't have. Premium touring modulars are the exception — their makers engineer multi-stage seals around the chin bar precisely because they know it's the weak point, and some of the quietest helmets on the market are flip-fronts. The category doesn't decide noise; the sealing engineering does.
Which should a new rider buy?
For most new riders, a full-face — it's lighter, simpler, usually cheaper for the same build quality, and removes the temptation to ride with the chin bar up. The exception is a rider who wears glasses, wears a beard they don't want to fight past, or rides with a passenger and stops constantly, where a modular's convenience genuinely changes whether they keep the helmet on.
