How We Research Motorcycle Gear
We haven't crash-tested this gear in a lab, and we don't pretend to have. Here is exactly what we do instead — and it's checkable.
Most motorcycle gear roundups lead with “we tested” and hope you don’t ask how. We take the opposite approach: we state plainly that we have not crash-tested the gear we compare— nobody honestly can on a review budget — and we compete on a method that doesn’t need a lab. We read every product against its published certification and specifications, cross-reference independent lab data where it exists, and reason transparently about who each piece is for. If you followed our steps with the same certifications and the same sources, you should reach the same conclusions.
1. Certification comes first
For anything that protects you in a crash — helmets and body armor especially — we lead with the certification the maker publishes for that specific model, read from the listing or the manufacturer’s page on a dated visit. For helmets that’s DOT (FMVSS 218), ECE 22.06 and SNELL M2020; for armor it’s the CE EN 1621 level. We explain what each of these means in our safety-ratings guide. Where a maker doesn’t publish a figure, we print “check current listing” rather than guess — a blank is a blank, not an invitation to make one up.
2. We flag roost protection vs impact protection
This is the clearest example of reading the certification carefully. A lot of products sold as “chest protectors” are actually roost deflectors certified to EN 14021— they stop flying debris off-road but carry no impact rating. A real impact protector is certified to EN 1621-3. Most sites blur the two; we call it out on every pick, because a rider who buys roost protection thinking it’s impact armor has been let down by the review, not just the label.
3. Every safety claim is cited
When we say helmets are roughly 37% effective at preventing rider deaths, or that ECE 22.06 added rotational-impact testing, that claim links to a primary source — NHTSA, the federal helmet standard (49 CFR 571.218), the UNECE regulation, the Snell Foundation, or an independent lab like MotoCAP or SHARP. We don’t assert safety facts on our own authority, because we haven’t earned that authority — we point you to the people who have, and list the sources at the bottom of every guide.
4. Rankings are argued, not scored
You will not find a numeric “9.2/10” anywhere on this site. A score implies a controlled measurement, and we haven’t measured this gear in a lab — slapping a number on a spec sheet would dress spec-reading up as testing. Instead, our rankings are reasoned in plain language: which helmet suits which head and budget, why one glove wins for summer and another for winter, and where the buyer-first choice is the cheaper option. That means an occasional “who it’s not for” and an outright “skip this” — which is the point.
5. Prices are live and dated — or they disappear
Every price on the site is pulled from a live retailer feed and stamped with the date it was pulled. We don’t store prices in our content, so a stale number can’t sneak onto a page. If the daily price check stops running, the numbers expire on their own within 48 hours and the buttons fall back to “Check price on Amazon” — the failure mode is silence, never a wrong figure. Product images come from the retailer; we own none of this gear and never stage a photo to imply otherwise.
6. We never fabricate proof
There are no invented reviews, testimonials, star ratings, or before-and-after photos anywhere on Apex & Armor. Verdicts are ours, written from the certification and the specs. Our author is a genuine enthusiast, framed honestly — no fake credentials, no “expert panel,” no claim of a test lab we don’t have. If we can’t source something honestly, it doesn’t appear.
7. Commission never decides a recommendation
We earn affiliate commissions, and we disclose them everywhere they apply. But the reasoning behind a pick is identical whether a link earns us anything or not. Where we could be wrong
Reading certifications and specs is not the same as crash testing, and we don’t claim it is. A certification is a floor, not a guarantee; fit, condition and how you wear the gear matter as much as the sticker. Products get revised, and a stated spec isn’t the only thing that decides real-world performance. Treat our guidance as well-researched starting point, not a verdict from a lab — and nothing here replaces professional rider training. If you find an error, tell usand we’ll correct it in the open.
