How to Choose a Motorcycle Jacket
Material, armor, fit and weather — in the order that actually matters, with the questions to ask before you spend anything.
A motorcycle jacket does two separate jobs, and confusing them is the most common buying mistake. It provides abrasion resistance— the material between your skin and the road — and it provides impact protection through the CE armor inside it. Those are different properties, delivered by different parts of the jacket, and a jacket can be excellent at one and useless at the other.
Work through the following in order. Getting the sequence right saves both money and the experience of owning a jacket you don’t wear.
Step 1: Define your climate honestly
Write down the temperature range you actually ride in and how often you ride in real rain. Not the range you might ride in someday — the one you rode in last year.
This matters because a jacket that’s wrong for your weather gets left at home, and a jacket at home protects nothing. Riders in Arizona who buy a three-season touring shell because it’s “more protective” end up riding in a T-shirt in August. That is a worse outcome than buying mesh.
Step 2: Choose the material
Leather
Best abrasion resistance, at roughly 1.0–1.4 mm cowhide for a road jacket. Warm, heavy, needs care, and stiff until broken in. Perforated versions breathe considerably better and are the sensible choice for anything but cold-weather riding. See the leather picks.
Textile
The versatile default. Modern textiles offer good abrasion resistance, take a waterproof membrane, accept liners, and carry more storage. The key distinction is laminate versus drop-liner: a laminate bonds the membrane to the outer shell so it never wets out; a drop-liner hangs the membrane inside, so the outer fabric soaks and gets heavy in sustained rain. Mesh
Maximum airflow, minimum abrasion coverage in the mesh panels. The right answer for genuine heat, and an honest trade rather than a compromise — a mesh jacket with CE armor that you wear in July beats a leather jacket in the closet. See the mesh picks.
Step 3: Verify the armor — especially the back
Read the listing carefully. There are three states and they are very different:
- CE armor includedat shoulders and elbows — good. Check the level if it’s published.
- Armor pockets only— the jacket arrives with no impact protection. Fine, if you budget for inserts.
- Unrated foam— most common in the back pocket, across almost every price point. This is padding, not armor.

Step 4: Check the fit in a riding position
This is where most jackets are bought wrong, because most people try them on standing up in a shop or in their living room.
- Put the jacket on with the layers you’ll actually wear.
- Sit down and reach forward as if holding handlebars at your bike’s height.
- Check the shoulder armor is still on the point of your shoulder and the elbow armor is still on your elbow. Not near them — on them.
- Check the sleeves still reach your wrists in that position. A jacket that fits standing often rides up four inches when you reach.
- Check the back still covers your lower back when seated and leaning forward.
If the elbow armor slides onto your forearm when you reach, the jacket is too big or cut for a different torso-to-arm ratio. That’s the specific failure mode that makes women’s-pattern jacketsworth seeking out rather than buying a small men’s.
Step 5: Budget for the back protector
Add $40–80 to whatever you were planning to spend, for a CE Level 1 or Level 2 back insert. Measure the jacket’s back pocket before buying — armor pockets aren’t standardized and an insert that doesn’t seat flat is worse than one sized correctly.
Things that matter less than the internet suggests
- Brand. Fit and armor outrank the badge, comfortably.
- Denier ratings. A high denier number tells you the yarn is thick; it says nothing about weave, coating or actual abrasion performance. Independent garment testing (MotoCAP in Australia) is far more informative where it exists.
- Number of vents.Intake vents without exhaust vents on the back don’t move air. Count both.
Things that matter more than you’d expect
- The collar. An unsealed collar makes any helmet significantly louder and lets cold air straight down your chest.
- A jacket-to-pant connection zip. Stops the jacket riding up over your back in a slide. Cheap feature, real benefit.
- Visibility.Reflective panels and hi-vis cost nothing and address the single most common way riders get hit — a driver not seeing them.
- Whether you like wearing it. Not a trivial point. The jacket you reach for is the jacket that protects you.

Frequently asked questions
Leather or textile for a motorcycle jacket?
Leather generally wins on abrasion resistance — properly thick cowhide survives a slide better than most textiles, which is why race suits are leather. Textile generally wins on weather protection, breathability, weight, storage and versatility. Neither material provides impact protection: that's entirely the CE armor's job. A textile jacket with Level 2 armor beats a leather jacket with no armor for most real-world crashes.
How should a motorcycle jacket fit?
Snug enough that the armor stays in position, loose enough for the layers you'll actually wear. The critical test is dynamic: get into a riding position and reach forward. The shoulder armor should stay on the point of the shoulder and the elbow armor on the elbow. A jacket that feels perfect standing upright but lets the elbow armor slide onto your forearm when you reach for the bars is the wrong size, no matter what the tag says.
Do I need a jacket with armor, or can I add it later?
Either works, as long as the jacket has armor pockets. A jacket with empty pockets plus $40-80 of CE inserts often ends up better protected than a jacket that shipped with unrated foam, because you control the certification level. What doesn't work is a jacket with no pockets and no armor — there's nowhere to add protection later, and that's a garment rather than riding gear.
Is a mesh motorcycle jacket safe?
It's a real trade rather than a yes or no. Mesh panels give up abrasion resistance compared to solid textile or leather — that's the cost of the airflow. What a mesh jacket does have is CE armor at the impact points and enough airflow that you'll actually keep it on when it's 95 degrees. A mesh jacket worn in heat protects you considerably more than a leather jacket left at home because it was too hot.
How much should I spend on a motorcycle jacket?
Around $150-250 buys a textile or mesh jacket with CE shoulder and elbow armor from an established brand, which is genuinely adequate protection. Above that you're paying for better weather membranes (laminate vs drop-liner), better fabrics, better fit and better hardware. Whatever you spend, reserve $40-80 of it for a CE-rated back insert — that upgrade improves your protection more than the same money spent on a nicer shell.
Can one jacket cover all seasons?
A three-season textile jacket with a waterproof membrane and a removable thermal liner covers roughly 40F to 85F comfortably. What no single jacket handles well is genuine summer heat above about 90F, because a vented shell still has far more fabric between you and the air than a mesh jacket does. Most riders who put on real mileage end up with a three-season shell plus a mesh jacket for high summer.
